With all the media attention focused on the Calgary Farmers’ Market, it seems many people have forgotten there are some great community farmers’ markets in Calgary.

One market that has returned after a one-year hiatus is the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Farmers’ Market held every Wednesday from 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Community Centre’s parking lot at 1320 – 5 Ave. NW. According to Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association staff, last summer the market was sorely missed as many people came into the Centre Wednesdays asking where the Farmers’ Market was. One community resident remarked she hopes the market survives as getting to the Calgary Farmers’ Market, located in Garrison Woods, is difficult.

Albeit somewhat smaller than in past years, shoppers still have a great selection of produce, breads, epicurean spices, handmade crafts, jewelry, specialty tea, coffee and gift items, scrumptious frozen pizzas, doggie treats and organic plants. Oh, how could I forget, there are also balloons for the kids (never underestimate how big a smile such as small thing can elicit from a child).

The Market’s location alone makes it worth the stop on Wednesdays. Idyllically located across from Riley Park, it is a great place to pick up some fresh fruit, vegetables and European, organic or sourdough bread, and head over to the park for an impromptu picnic. This is a great way to escape rush hour traffic or a crowded C-Train (the station is a mere four blocks away). Or, if you don’t feel like cooking, stop in and pick up one of the topping generous pizzas that you can just pop in the oven and serve.

Market manager Cayley Thiessen said they are still getting interest from new vendors and the market has visibly expanded since it opened in June.

Later in the season you can get a jump on Christmas shopping. One craft vendor offers lovingly handknit children’s sweaters at an extremely reasonable price, while another has the coolest one-of-a-kind jewelry.

The best thing about the Market is its community base. It is a great place to get a bit of shopping done, meet with neighbours and connect with community life. Bonus, you are also supporting community programs that extend beyond the Hillhurst-Sunnyside borders.

So next Wednesday why not take a break from the rush hour and check out the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Farmers’ Market.
